The public is invited to a ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019, in rememberance of the events of Sept. 11, 2011. The commemoration of the events of 9/11 has been held annually since its first anniversary on the Lake Mohawk Boardwalk. Last year, the Sparta Elks, who host the ceremony, moved it to Town Hall.

“The ceremony was written by the members of Sparta Elks immediately after 9/11 and has been performed every year since while this is hosted by the Sparta Elks,” said Anthony Alfonso, of the Sparta Elks. “We encourage and invite all other organizations including the youth to participate we have speakers from local first responders as well as scouting troops participating.”

“The Sparta Elks runs this event and the Flag Day Ceremony in June and invites all the non-profit organizations in town, state and local government officials along with town residents and anyone who wants to remember this very solemn day,” said Gill Gilbert who has served for years on the Sparta town council and two terms as mayor. “Last year we had 10 different Organization attend from the VFW, American Legion, to the boy and girl Scouts. All assist with the Ceremony.”
