CNN news anchor Lou Dobbs visits Sparta High School

Sparta - CNN news anchor Lou Dobbs visited Sparta High School recently to discuss economic issues with students. He met with the economics class and the Junior States of America club and they debated and discussed issues including immigration, gay marriage and high gas prices. Dobbs was invited to attend the economic forum by the Junior States of America, the largest student-run high-school organization in America, with over 16,000 members throughout the U.S. and Canada. The non-partisan group is made up of members interested in law, politics, government, debate and education. Students organize every aspect of the organization, from the school chapter level to the national administration. Sparta students formed a chapter this year, allowing for an exchange of ideas through student debates, thought talks and conferences. Frank Sanchez, faculty advisor of the chapter, said he was proud that his students were able to schedule Dobbs, a national figure in the current immigration debate. “These students are passionate about politics and want to be part of the national discourse,” said Sanchez. “It is an honor to listen to these students tackle issues such as drug testing, the war in Iraq, the Patriot Act and church-state controversies.” The club is planning a 9/11 forum for next September to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Local residents who would like to offer assistance or suggest guest speakers may contact Sanchez at 973-729-6191, ext 416.
