Newton - The ninth annual “A Day in Sussex County History” will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sat., May 6, at Sussex County Community College. The day will feature more than 40 historical societies from around the region; plus a model train exhibit, carriage rides, antique engines and more. The event is free and open to the public and will take place rain or shine. Free flags, donated by Nellie Stires-Howell, treasurer of the Sussex County Historical Society, will be given to the first 100 children under 12 years of age. Stires-Howell said she anticipates this year’s event to exceed that of last year. “We just want everyone to come out and enjoy the day,” she declared. “‘A Day in Sussex County History’ is such a great way to teach children about the county so they might continue to share their knowledge about Sussex County.” This year, teachers can again earn three free professional development hours during “A Day in Sussex County History.” Although the program, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., is specially designed for fourth and fifth grade teachers who include the history of Sussex County in their curriculum, all teachers are welcome. Teachers will earn three hours in history education towards the N.J. Dept. of Education professional development requirement. The registration fee is $10. For information, call 973-300-2124. Program particpants will: •Meet with local historical societies •Learn more about Sussex County’s role in history •Participate in on-site historical presentations •Be able to purchase food available •Receive a certificate of participation •Receive a continental breakfast voucher, only for those who come to the museum. As part of the program, the museum will be open from 8 to 9 a.m. The Sussex County Historical Society was established in 1904, following the county’s 150th anniversary celebration. It brings together people interested in the prehistory, history and native culture of Sussex County. The Society seeks out, collects, preserves, restores and studies materials that reveal and illustrate the county’s history. For information, call 973-948-7300.
