SPARTA — The middle school eighth grade Emerald team will host a car wash on Saturday, June 4, from 8 a.m. to noon, at the Mohawk Avenue School. The car wash is part of a service-learning project called Change the World. A service learning project is done in conjunction with the Holocaust unit. The students research a local or global issue and come up with a plan to help. The students then present their ideas to their classmates, and the entire team of students votes on which plan to support. In the past, the Emerald Team has raised money for Darfur and the ASPCA. This year’s winning project, presented by Cassidy Perkinson and Alexa Vatter, is called Scrub for St. Jude. “The purpose of this project, besides sharpening research and writing skills, is to empower children to make a difference in the world. The project was done in Connections class, “ said Connections teacher Melissa Fitch. All proceeds will go to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, which treats children with cancer, regardless of their family’s ability to pay.
