SPARTA - The Heartsavesaver Pediatric one-day course is for individuals who are expected to provide CPR in the work place. This course will focus on one-rescuer CPR and foreign body airway obstruction (choking), and also includes the use of barrier devices. The course will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, at Sparta Health and Wellness, 89 Sparta Ave. Fee $35; pre-registration required. Syndrome X/metabolic syndrome NEWTON - Newton Memorial Hospital will host a seminar on syndrome X, otherwise known as metabolic syndrome, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 28, at Newton Memorial Hospital, 175 High St., Newton. Participants will learn what are the diagnosis, treatment strategies, risk factors and preventive measures for metabolic syndrome. Doctors have known for years that health problems such as obesity and high blood pressure can increase the risk of other diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes, but only recently did they begin to see these as a part of metabolic syndrome. Ramya Pasunuri, M.D., who joined the Newton Memorial Hospital medical staff in 2004, will be guest speaker. Dr. Pasunuri is board certified in internal medicine and completed specialty training in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Health System Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio.
