Helen Morgan students win Reading Rainbow' honors

Sparta - Several young authors from Ruth Kane’s second-grade class at Helen Morgan School in Sparta were recognized recently for their excellent stories. With help from Nanci Jacobs, parent of one of the students, several students’ stories were submitted to the Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest, sponsored by TV stations PBS39 and WLVT in Allentown, Pa. (Service Electric Cable Ch. 214). The two winners in the second-grade category were from Kane’s class. Gretchen Bowie took first place and Chris Rudel took second place. The two girls and their families, along with Robyn and Kaity Jacobs, went to Allentown on April 4 to accept their awards and recognition. Kane has been working with her students to develop their writing skills through her weekly writing workshops. The Reading Rainbow contest was a nationally run event before funding for PBS programming was cut by government budget cuts. Several local stations across the country have continued to run the contest with funding through their own stations. For more information, log on to PBS.org.
