SPARTA — The Junior Woman’s Club of Sparta (JWCS), along with Junior Woman’s Clubs across New Jersey, is participating in the 2011 Annual Day of Service, which this year focuses on The Veteran's Homes of New Jersey. There are three veterans’ homes in New Jersey, open to the service men and women from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy. The first residents were veterans from the War of 1812, and today the Homes work to serve the needs of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. The JWCS is supporting this project by organizing a collection in the Sparta area of donated items for veterans. Residents of the Veterans’ Homes have expressed a need for the following items: Clothing for Men: sweatshirts (sizes L to 3XL); sweatpants (sizes L to 3XL); tee shirts (sizes M to 3XL); baseball caps (with adjustable band); knit winter hats; socks - with non-skid bottoms or crew socks without elastic tops Personal Care: deodorant or body sprays (gender neutral); hair brushes and wide tooth combs; tooth paste and tooth brushes; denture care products (adhesives and cleansers), electric razors Miscellaneous items: Batteries - all sizes "AA" to "D" and including hearing aid sizes; sunglasses with dark lenses All items should be new with tags on and in the original packaging. No liquids are permitted. A collection box for donated items will be available at the Sparta Parks and Recreation Department, the Sparta Post Office and Stop & Shop through Friday, October 7th. Please help the Junior Woman’s Club of Sparta support the Veterans’ Homes of New Jersey in their tradition of concern and commitment to those who have served our country. Members of JWCS are dedicated to community involvement through volunteer service. For more information about Juniors and club activities please visit www.jwcsparta.org.
