Sparta — Local area women are invited to attend the general meeting of the Junior Woman's Club of Sparta at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, on the first floor gathering room of the Lake Mohawk Country Club. A new member coffee will be held later in the month for women interested in joining the Sparta Junior Woman's Club. Call the club for details. The October meeting is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3. The club is a way to meet women with common interests and get involved with community projects. The conservation department finds ways to explore nature, enjoy the outdoors with family and search for new ways to conserve. An ongoing activity is collecting used sneakers for the "Nike Sneaker Recycling Program." The education department inspires a lifelong love of learning in women and their children, to increase the opportunities for further education in the community. An ongoing activity is the collection of "Box Tops for Education." The health department promotes health consciousness in our members and community by encouraging improved eating habits, exercise and de-stressing techniques, and raising awareness of various health issues. The home life art department organizes various activities that promote positive family values and improves the quality of life for members of the club and community. Creative activities include evenings out for adults, activities and events to enjoy with children and projects to serve the community. This month's activity is apple picking. Details will be outlined at the general meeting. The international affairs department promotes the understanding and acceptance of international causes, events and traditions and to inform members of global issues impacting world cultures. Currently, this department is raising money for Heifer International. The membership department maintains and strengthens membership through activities, recognition and participation. This month the membership department is planning a scrapbooking event. The public affairs department raises awareness of citizenship, crime prevention and safety. This month, voter registration forms will be available at the general meeting for distribution. The Juniorette advisory department acts as a liason between our club and the Juniorette club. This month the department will be focusing on recruiting new Juniorettes to help organize upcoming events. The club will be sponsoring several upcoming events. This year's Festival of Trees will be held on Nov. 18-19 at the Lake Mohawk Golf Club in Sparta. Proceeds will benefit Cherished Creations, a non-profit organization whose mission is to create better lives for seriously ill children and underprivileged families. For over twenty years in late November, the club's Holiday Wish Tree at the Sparta Public Library has been making holidays happier for children in Sussex County. The club presents the tree to the community as a vehicle through which gifts can be brought to children in need. In 2006, their second annual Casino Night will be held on Feb. 18 from 6:30-11 p.m. at Perona Farms in Andover. Advance tickets will go on sale and proceeds will go to charity.
