Junior Woman's Club selects scholarship winner

    SPARTA-The Junior Woman's Club of Sparta awarded a $1,500 scholarship to Laura Maurer. Her selection as the 2005 winner was based on her dedication to volunteerism as well as her excellent grade point average. Maurer graduated from Pope John High School with a GPA of 4.08. She was also a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Language Honor Society and Latin Honor Society. In addition, Maurer participated in violin study, yearbook activities and was captain and most valuable player of the volleyball team. Maurer also volunteered for several organizations including Project Self-Sufficiency, Room for One More Animal Shelter, Sparta United Methodist Church, and Pass It Along. "Laura is a very bright, conscientious, and hard working individual," said Katherine Schuma, her guidance counselor. "She has high aspirations and is committed to fulfilling her goals." Maurer will attend Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va., with a major in International Business and minors in Spanish and Italian.
