Lady Spartan runners earn scholarships

Sparta - Sparta High School seniors Corinne LaChac and Cailin Lynam have signed letters of intent to run track and cross country at Monmouth University in West Long Branch. The teammates recently were awarded athletic and academic scholarships at the NCAA Division I school. LaChac and Lynam have helped lead the Lady Spartans to a 4-0 start during the current spring track season, as well as a 7-2 finish during last fall’s girls’ cross country season. In girls’ cross country, Lynam was a first-team All-Sussex County selection and a second-team pick to the state’s All-Group 3 squad, while LaChac was named to the All-Sussex County second team. LaChac excelled in soccer before she started running for the Lady Spartans in her junior year, earning the team’s “most-valuable runner” honors during the spring 2005 track season, when she advanced to the state’s group championships in the 3,200 meters. Lynam, who has earned the team’s “MVP” award seven times during the past four years while running spring and winter track and cross country, qualified for New Jersey’s “Meet of Championships” in cross country last fall, and advanced to the state’s group championships in the 800 meters during the spring 2005 track season. She holds eight team records.
