SPARTA - Guests of honor at the annual holiday party at the Thomas Talmadge American Legion Post #491, Sparta, on Dec. 8, were Deborah and Richard O’Brien, parents of Dan O’Brien who as a high school student played American Legion Baseball. Dan lost his life in an auto accident at 21 years old. Because of Dan’s avid interest and enjoyment of baseball, the O’Briens wanted to provide a constant remembrance of their son’s love of the game. They created a scholarship fund for high school students active in the sport. Recipients of the 2005 scholarships were Chris Liegel and Dan Mastriana; 2006 recipients were Randy Stiebing and Sean Horan. The value of each scholarship is $250.
