Leigh Emery is awarded the Jefferson Arts Committee scholarship
Jefferson - The Jefferson Arts Committee has awarded its 2006 scholarship to Jefferson Township High School student Leigh Emery. The daughter of Charles and Helene Emery of Lake Hopatcong, she is beginning her college education this September at Westminster Choir College as a music education and voice performance major. Her aspiration is to become a music teacher and perform on Broadway. A member of the National Honor Society and graduating in the top 10 percent of her class, Leigh was the female lead Marion Paroo in the high school’s 2006 production of The Music Man, was appointed director/conductor of the school’s Women’s Ensemble, and was the featured soloist singing “Pie Jesu” in a performance of Faure Requiem. According to James Wynne, Choral Director at JTHS, Leigh was a devoted member of many school ensembles, including Chamber Choir and the Madrigal Singers and had been selected as a member of the New Jersey All State Chorus, The North Jersey Region I Chorus, and the All Sussex County Chorus. For three years in a row, Leigh was ranked eighth Soprano 1 in New Jersey at the New Jersey All State SATB Choir auditions; and for two years in a row, she took first place at the JTHS Talent Expo. Leigh was also under consideration for a spot in the All Eastern Chorus - the highest level of honors choir that a high school student can attain. In addition to her academic classes, which included both Honors Level classes and Advanced Placement Classes, Leigh took many music education courses including three years of Music Technology and two years of Music Theory. She also took private voice and piano lessons as well as summer classes at Westminster Choir College. Liz Mangold, Chairperson of the Arts Committee’s Scholarship Committee, presented Leigh with the organization’s annual monetary award at the Jefferson Township High School’s Senior Awards Ceremony held this past June.
