— As the summer weather heats up, so does tournament season for girls’ softball in Sparta.

The Sparta 12U Blue Diamonds recently competed in the 2015 East Brunswick “Weekend of Chaos” tournament for the first time.

Facing top teams from south jersey, the 12U Blue Diamonds went 4-1, winning the championship game 12-4 against the South Plainfield Tigers.

This is the second tournament championship this year for the 12U Blue Diamonds, after winning the Tenafly “Safe At Home” tournament a few weeks ago.

Over the two hot and humid days, the girls fought hard and played together as they marched to the championship.

“Every girl did something to help us win this championship," Coach Joe Jacobs said. "I am so proud of our team and how hard they played. This is a great way to head into the playoffs.”

The Sparta bats got hot early and stayed that way throughout the championship, while tight defense and aggressive base running helped secure the win.

The Sparta Girls Softball program is flourishing once again with successful teams at the Rec and Diamond Travel levels.

“Having opened our own facility this year and battling to keep the number of participants at the Rec level up, it is great for our whole program when one of our teams are successful," President Ray Manning said.

All Sparta Diamond travel teams are heading into the playoffs for the 2015 Spring League title over the next few weeks and Sparta hosts its annual “Schools Out” tournament June 19-21.
