Former officer, war veteran, dies

SPARTA — Sparta Chief of Police Ernest I. Reigstad announced the passing of retired communications officer Robert W. Jennings. He was 71.

Jennings, who was under hospice care, passed away this past Saturday at his home in Frankford with his beloved wife of 45 years, Jolinda, at his side.

Jennings was a Vietnam Combat Veteran.

He was a strong positive fixture of the Sparta Police Department for decades. He was well known, respected and admired by all members of Sussex County Law Enforcement. He will always be remembered as a true American hero.

A man of conviction and strength, who as a sergeant in the United States Army served his country proudly and with distinction in Vietnam. After being seriously wounded in combat, Jennings was awarded the Purple Heart.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, he settled in Frankford with his wife.

Jennings is survived by his daughter, Tina and her fiancé, John Phillips; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his brother Frank, of Sebring, fla., and his sister Laraine, of Branchville, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main St. in Branchville.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Jennings will be laid to rest with full Military Honors at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Branchville Cemetery.
