— Hero Pattern, a local band that was on the scene until 2008 returns to Krogh’s on Saturday, Jan. 14 under the new name “Jason Robert and the Good Silver.” Founder, front man and Sparta resident Jason Kundrath is excited about his return to the stage especially where he laid his roots.
“Hero Pattern played many memorable shows at Krogh’s and this feels like a homecoming of sorts. Despite my break from music, I've never stopped writing music and honing my craft, and it's only now I've finally put another band together,” Kundrath said.
Along for this new ride is Hero Pattern former guitarist and Sparta native Pierre Marceau plus new members: keyboardist Ron Grana of Sparta, bassist Ed Sherry of Newton, and drummer Christian Kisala of Hawthorne.
The reincarnation represents a shift in the music played by Kundrath and his band mates who are around 38 years old and now parents:
“Music is slower and relatively softer these days," Kundrath said. "And as expected, my lyrics have evolved with time. When you're starting out, in your early twenties, the path from your heart to your brain is direct and unobstructed. A troubled heart seems like the biggest thing in the world because at the time it is and has your undivided attention. These days, I have a family, a career, and a good amount of perspective to draw upon. “
Calling it ‘acoustic –driven pop’, there is also a rock influence as seen in cover songs from Elvis Costello, The Beatles and Tom Petty, but also in original music written by Kundrath.
“The songs are about bravery, gratitude, and finding balance in a chaotic world. Sometimes I write lyrics based on real-life stories. So I'm occasionally still writing about broken hearts too, but these days, they're not mine,” he said.
Although Kundrath has not quit his day job as manager at Trader Joe’s in Edgewater, he believes the timing and karma surrounding Jason Robert and the Good Silver will lead to success.
“January 14 will be the first time the entire band will be performing together, and I feel really good about it. Reconnecting with Pierre has anchored me to this new project. And with this band, I really feel like we're onto something special.”
