Hilltop school introduces girls to engineering
SPARTA — Hilltop Country Day School in Sparta recently held an Introduce a Girl to Engineering Workshop.
The girls had an opportunity to tinker, explore and have some fun as they designed and engineered a variety of projects. Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is a growing movement to inspire girls' futures so they learn they have a place in engineering a better world. Discover E (formerly the National Engineers Week Foundation) created the day which typically runs in February.
"Hilltop celebrated the day in February," said Assistant Head of School Laura McGee. "It was such a success we wanted to hold another workshop."
The design stations included building a hydraulic machine, designing a wooden pencil holder using a drill, crafting a supply case using a recycled bottle and a zipper, 3D printing and making a simple circuit with copper tape and LED stickers to light up a drawing.
This community event hosted 26 girls ages 4 - 12 from Hilltop and the surrounding communities.
"What I like best about a workshop like this is the collaboration and creativity the girls show as they approach each challenge," McGee said. "The pride and sense of accomplishment the girls show in their work is impressive. It is especially awesome when you to see the girls carrying their newly made supply case the next day."
