Holiday open house at Sparta Historical Society

SPARTA — On Sunday, December 10, 2017, the Sparta Historical Society will decorate the Van Kirk Homestead Museum in a vintage holiday style. We invite the community and families to stop by. This will be the last opportunity to visit the Van Kirk Homestead this year. The Holiday opening will be held from 1-4 pm with 2 pm talk.
As part of the Holiday Open House, all permanent gallery rooms, both main floor and upstairs will be in operation. The permanent main floor Sparta Gallery room displays Sparta’s diverse economic, historical and cultural heritage featuring Sparta’s Native American artifacts, Robert Ogden letters, exhibits on agriculture and early industries, arrival of the railroads, Lake Mohawk and tourism. The permanent main floor Farm Gallery room displays vintage farming tools as well as a farm model display. As you enter, the Van Kirk Homestead, the Victorian parlor with its period furnishings greet you.
Most important of all, this will be the final day to see the Fall 2017 exhibit, “Princess White Deer: A Woman, A Mohawk, and A Legend” by guest curator and author, Patricia Galperin of Sparta. The last talk about this exhibit is scheduled at 2 pm. The major changing gallery will be reopening on April 8, 2018 with a brand new spring exhibit, “Birds, Bugs, and Bats: Our Farmers’ Helpers.”
