Independence Day Parade in White Deer Plaza
Sparta — Hundreds of people of all ages came out on July 4th to line the streets near Lake Mohawk and to participate in the township's Independence Day Parade, celebrating the nation's 242nd birthday.
The weather was hot, the skies overcast, but marchers and spectators were undeterred and full of spirit, as fire engines, ambulances, antique automobiles, floats, marching bands, scouting troops, banner-touting organizations, flag-flying first responder groups and hand-waving township officials paraded along East Shore Trail, through White Deer Plaza and on to Mohawk Avenue School to the strains of patriotic music and the happy cheers of onlookers.
The Sparta Elks sponsored the event. Donna Jenkins, who after 28 years is retiring from her post as program coordinator for the township recreation department, was the parade's grand marshal.
