SPARTA — The Lake Mohawk Pool Swim Team culminated their season by winning the Blue Division of the Lakeland Swim Conference. A trophy was presented to pool owner Greg Leo at a season’s end celebration on Aug.13.
The 68- member team ages 5 to 18 years old practiced every weekday since the school year ended in late June. Weekly swim meets were held on Wednesday evenings where the team traveled to various lakes in New Jersey to compete.
Coaches Sarah Pisano and Tim Holovacs cannot specify how many years it has been since the team has won a championship. Although they have been coaching since about 2013, their roots go back many years ago to swimming on the Cruiser Club (former name of Lake Mohawk Pool) team as children.
“This is the first time that we have won our division in many years, if ever. So this is very exciting for everyone,” said Pisano. “We are so proud of how far our swimmers have progressed this summer. Their dedication and passion for the sport was evident throughout each practice and race.”
Based on meeting specific times for strokes, select swimmers were invited to compete in the Lakeland Swim Conference ‘A ‘Championships held at Smoke Rise in Kinnelon on Sat., Aug.13.
“I am very happy to have so many swimmers who joined the team for the first time this year, many nervous and apprehensive about trying something new,” Holovacs said. “They improved so much and making it to the league championship meet in their first season is a huge success. Our team continues to grow, improve and get stronger each year.”
