Lake Mohawk to host last home meet

SPARTA — All are welcome to attend the last meet of the season on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to see the Hawks compete against White Meadow Lake swim team.

Home to the Hawks, The Lake Mohawk Pool is a newly renovated private pool and club located on the shore of Lake Mohawk.

Formerly known as “The Cruiser Club” the site has been a fixture in the Sparta community for decades and has enjoyed a long tradition of successful competitive swimming. The Hawks have a new head coach, Tim Holovacs. Holovacs began his swimming career at the Cruiser Club at age six. In high school, he competed in state championships and YMCA Nationals and set a Sussex County record in the 400 meter freestyle, which still stands today.

Holovacs was recruited to swim for the University of Pennsylvania. Setting several records his freshman year, he continued to swim earning varsity letters all four years. In his senior year he was elected captain.

After graduating, Holovacs taught swim lessons at Sussex County Vo-Tech for a year, and continued training children and adults in swim technique.

In recent years, he has added sculling and triathlons to his athletic endeavors. He has competed in international sculling regattas, winning a gold at the Master’s World Regatta and a silver at the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston.

When asked about his current role at the Lake Mohawk Pool Holovacs said, “I am very happy to be back coaching at the Cruiser Club, where it all began 35 years ago. I remain passionate about the sport of swimming and educating others about the many benefits athletes can gain from swimming. We have a wide variety of athletes swimming for the Hawks to improve their fitness in other sports and to avoid overuse injuries. In additional to those who are primarily swimmers we have runners, soccer, football, lacrosse players and competition cheerleaders training, all working to improve fitness and physiologic function.”

The Lake Mohawk Pool’s Hawks Swim Team is looking for more members next summer. The team is open to pool members and non-members ages six to 17.

The season runs from mid-June to mid-August with morning practices Monday through Friday and evening meets.
