— Lomaani Ranasinghe performed at the Rockport Music Hall in Massachusetts on April 16. Lomaani won a third place in the Crescendo International Music Competition held in Princeton New Jersey. She was honored with a performance seat for this prestigious venue. The Rockport Music Hall is also known as The Shalin Liu Performance Center, after its benefactor. Its architectural design received 7 awards. The acoustics were perfected by world renowned acoustician, Lawrence Kirkegaard.
Ranasinghe performed Prelude Opus 28 #18 composed by Frederik Chopin, a Romantic period composer. Chopin decided to write some Preludes of his own having memorized all of Bach’s preludes. His approach for Prelude Opus 28 #18 was much more open than Bach’s Preludes with reckless and intense expression.
“Lomaani played this powerful piece with fiery expression. The audience was audibly captured. She performed with total accuracy, rapid tempo and dynamic interest,” said Joan Farrington, Lomaani’s piano teacher.
Lomaani is a member of the National honor Society, National German Honor Society. She is the pianist in Sparta High School Blues Sanction Jazz Band and Sparta High School Blues, Inc. Jazz band. Miss Ranasinghe hopes to pursue medicine and become a virologist in the future.
Joan Farrington has taught piano in Sparta for 42 years and is a current member of Music Teachers National Association and Music Teachers of New Jersey Association.
