Math learning center now in Sparta

SPARTA — Operating on the foundation that every child can become great at math, Mathnasium opened Oct.23 at 8 Town Center near Stop & Shop.
Sparta residents Mary and Ray Muller, lovers of math and numbers, own the franchise that caters to children in grades 2 through 12, offering a customized learning plan of supplementary math programs and personalized instruction.
Mathnasium has 57 locations in New Jersey and 809 total in the US and Canada, said Ray. Unlike other learning centers, it offers only math and no homework drills like competitor and very popular Kumon. Sparta's Mathnasium will have a grand opening ceremony on Dec. 9 at 2 pm.
Ray is an actuary by profession, and Mary is a certified teacher who often subs at Sparta Middle School. An entrepreneurial drive and a cousin in Florida who owns a successful Mathnasium inspired the couple, who believe this business model is a good fit for the community.
“The difference is we actually assess the kids and meet them where they are and fill in the gaps,” said Mary Muller, center director. “Our goal is simple: to teach math in a way that makes sense to kids.”
Ray points out an example of algebra.
“Sometimes a child gets to algebra and doesn’t understand fractions or percentages or they forgot. We can fill in those gaps.”
And Mathnasium is not only for those who struggle in math, but also for those who want more math with enrichment.
“If they are good at math or really like it, we can give them more challenges to get ahead. The point is it’s a personalized plan,” he added.
Mathnasium’s goal is to strategize, not memorize. Building confidence is also a priority.
“We are trying to make numbers fun and fluid. We give kids an incentive with a prize wheel making it enticing,” said Mary.
A risk-free evaluation is the first step at Mathnasium. A six-month membership is suggested. Mathnasium has tiered costs and depends on the grade and, according to the owners, is over all cheaper than a privavte tutor. More information is available by calling 973-726-MATH (6284).
“You can see results in six to eight weeks. There is no appointment required once one is signed up. Kids can come in as much as they like, but two times a week is recommended,” said Ray.
SAT prep packages and summer sessions are also available. Mary Muller is pleased with the response so far:
“Mathnasium centers across the country have helped struggling students develop into ‘A’ students and go onto even greater achievements. We are thrilled to be able to brung MAthnasium Method to support the families of Sparta.”
