May the 4th Be with You

SPARTA — Creating their own Star Wars extravaganza, young patrons of Sparta Public Library had a blast on May 4 celebrating Star Wars Day.
“May the 4th Be with You” was the theme with a variety of activities including decorating Lea cupcakes and using ordinary things to make extraordinary Star Wars stuff.
“The kids enjoyed making a BB-8 out of paper plates and light sabers from pool noodles,” said Meaghan Darling, Youth Services Librarian. “It was a popular event with 65 people in attendance."
And what’s a party without food? Hans Solo “carbonite” jello, Yoda juice and creamed cheese tie fighters were just a few of the edible treats. Culminating the event was a showing of the latest Star Wars film “The Last Jedi."
Next on the horizon, adds Darling is “The Great American Read” starting Tuesday, May 22.
"'The Great American Read' is an upcoming PBS series that seeks to determine America's favorite novel from their list of 100 novels selected from a national survey," she said. "PBS will be airing an 8-part series that highlights the books on the list as well as hosting a daily vote in which readers can vote for their favorite title."
The kick-off event on Tuesday, May 22 from 3 to 7:30 pm coincides with the first PBS episode premiering that night. Sparta Library will unveil its book display and copies of the list will be distributed. Staff will be on had to provide more details and light refreshments will be served.
"The Sparta Library is very excited for this national book event. We will have a prominent display in the library that includes all 100 titles on the list and hold events such as book talks and movies based on the books,” said Darling.
