'Only in Jersey' ice cream flavors
By Laurie Gordon
FREDON — In Sussex County, people's thoughts turned to ice cream over the weekend as Windy Brow Farm and its dairy, The Cow's Brow, presented its third annual Ice Cream Festival. This year, however, taste buds danced to a different drum. A few months ago, in addition to its traditional flavors, the Cow's Brow creator and owner, Jake Hunt, launched an all-about-Jersey line of flavors.
In celebration of five years in business for the dairy, Hunt decided to think “outside the cone” and spawned “Only in Jersey” ice cream flavors starting with Taylor Ham and French Toast. His creation went viral and gained national attention.
Now, he's added Sweet Corn and Honey, which actually contains real corn and cornbread, Butermilk and Blueberry, Cranberry Creamsicle, and Tomato Pie.
“For our Ice Cream Festival, we offered 'flights' which included samples of all five of our Only in Jersey flavors,” Hunt said. “We sold a lot of them because people were just so curious.”
At the end of the day, Hunt said the Taylor Ham and French Toast was still the favorite flavor, but the Buttermilk and Blueberry was a close second.
“The Sweet Corn and Honey we did as another just 'out there' flavor like the Taylor Ham,” he said. “We'll keep all of the Jersey flavors until the end of the summer and then keep on offering the Taylor Ham and French Toast throughout the fall.”
He said people found the Tomato Pie interesting.
“We didn't go with a full out, in your face tomato flavor but made it more subtle with the addition of basil flavoring and ricotta,” Hunt said. “Things that don’t belong in ice cream: oregano, red pepper flake, cumin, black pepper, sungold tomato jam, ricotta cream and sweet basil are things we put in ice cream. Our Tomato Pie ice cream is truly one of a kind.”
Shira Kamil, who co-owns Backroads, a motorcycle, travel and adventure magazine, said, “The Tomato Pie was amazingly spicy, creamy, non-tomatoey and super refreshing. Sweet corn and honey had a touch of corn but mostly honey which when so well with the tomato pie. Don’t be ice cream racist, try them all, you will be pleasantly surprised.”
Of the annual festival, this year's event drew over 3,000 people who willingly waited on line to sample The Cow's Brow's ice cream.
