Preservation group seeks volunteers for Earth Day cleanup

SPARTA — Earth Day is celebrated on April 22- a Saturday this year- and community members will be celebrating with an annual Community Clean Up. Lakes, rivers and streams are abundant in Sparta and Byram. Spring rains fill up these bodies of water. Along with rainwater, garbage, cigarette filters and other waste drain into our waterways.
Last year we had well over 100 volunteers participate in cleaning up our community. More than 100 bags of trash and 20 full bags of recyclables were collected in just a few hours. By participating in the “Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation Celebrates Earth Day” event, you can beautify your neighborhood and prevent waste from entering our waterways during spring and summer rains.
We are asking for volunteers groups like boy scouts, girl scouts, ecology and environmental clubs, and other organizations- as well as individuals- to pledge to participate in this Earth Day event. Supplies will be provided. Let us know that you want to help by contacting Craig Kalucki at Craigk@thesimpleclean.com. Our event leaders will assist you in choosing an area to cleanup. Last year our volunteers removed over 10,000 nonbiodegradable cigarette filters in just a few hours.
The Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation is also planning an Earth Day Volunteer Pre-Celebration Event at the Lake House Cafe in White Deer Plaza on Friday evening, April 21 beginning at 5:00 pm. Supplies will be distributed and light refreshments will be served. For those who cannot make it to this event, volunteers will also be able to pick up supplies for the Earth Day clean up on Saturday morning at the Lake House Cafe.
Call or email Event Coordinator Craig Kalucki NOW at CraigK@thesimpleclean.com or 908-670-9473. You can also leave a message on our Facebook Page/Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation to let us know you will participate. Organize your group, or plan to participate as an individual. We can help you choose a location to clean up that is close to your home or in an area that you have an interest in cleaning up.
Did we mention that there will be prizes for teams? We are keen on cleaning up cigarette butts that have been carelessly discarded and plan on having prizes based on top performing teams! Other fun prizes will be announced at our Pre-Celebration Event. Details will be posted on our Facebook Page--check it out frequently for updates! Please plan to participate on April 22. We needed everyone to help keep our communities clean! More information is available at our website, lakemohawkcc.com/html/lake-foundation.cfm
If you are not able to help pick up litter on April 22-- or even if you are-- you can assist our effort in another way. We are looking for sponsors of the Lake Mohawk Celebrates Earth Day event. This year we are not just celebrating Earth Day--we are celebrating with a gathering the evening before! Join Askin and Hooker, LLC, Attorneys at Law, The Lake House Cafe, Gymboree of Pine Brook, Red Eye Café of Montclair and Marie and Rich Cramer in committing financially to making this an exciting and successful community event.
We hope to have lots of people join us on Friday evening, April 21 at 5pm. Light refreshments will be served and supplies will be distributed for Saturday. The Lake House Cafe in White Deer Plaza is generously donating their restaurant for this celebration.
If you want to be included on our sponsor list for Earth Day, call Marie at (973)868-0469 or message us on Facebook . We can tell you about sponsorship opportunities. You can also send us an email at foundation@lakemohawkcc.com. Our donors will be recognized in a variety of ways, including recognition at our celebration, social media shout outs, press releases, and acknowledgement on our website.
