More than a form of transportation, skateboards have been transformed into a work of art.
For the month of August, Sparta High School students are showcasing their 'Cultural Skateboards' at Zumiez in the Rockaway mall.
In the 2-Dimensional Design class, taught by Christine Mase, students studied various cultures and designed long boards influenced by Mayan, African, Asian, American Indian and Mexican art.
"Part of class is learning about cultures," said Mase. "I am a professional artist and I thought it would be cool to learn how professional art is approached through different cultures."
Skateboards were chosen as a medium as it relates to students culturally.
The art work was completed in May and June.
Student participants included: Topanga Hockett, Matt Browne, Even Bahnsen, John Reinbott, Jillian Hoffman, Shelby Kopeski, Jennifer Molina, Shirley Wang, Taylor Enos-Quidort and Michael Masucci.
