Solar company chosen for old landfill site

The Sparta Township Council on June 14 designating a redeveloper for the installation of a solar energy facility at the former landfill on Price’s Lane.

The council authorized a long-term lease with CEP Renewables, LLC, of Red Bank, which will make the company responsible for the landfill closure, except for when it is necessary for the township to execute matters relating to property ownership.

CEP will pay an annual lease based on the wattage produced. The current lease estimate is set at a minimum of $45,000 per megawatt hour and up to an estimated $450,000 annually. The company also will pay two $100,000 non-refundable deposits after the conclusion of the due diligence period.

The landfill was closed about 20 years ago, and the Sparta Township Council sent out a request for proposals for energy installers to lease the property. Ten companies expressed interest in the site and eight firms submitted sealed proposals.
