Sparta Chess Club turns 17
SPARTA — The Sparta Chess Club will open its 17th season next week in the five Sparta schools. The club has an uphill climb this year to duplicate their accomplishments of the last school year. The team won a national, 3 regional, and one state championship across all of the age groups. The team has played in 17 states and has trips planned to Baltimore, Dallas, and Chicago for the upcoming year.
The schedule for Sparta schools is as follows: Tuesday afternoon - Sparta Middle School Rm 271; Wednesday morning - Alpine School all-purpose room 8am; Wednesday afternoon - Sparta High School after school in the TLC; Thursday afternoon - Helen Morgan School Library; Friday afternoon - Mohawk Ave School all purpose room. The club runs two nationally rated tournaments, and has special events including Chess on the Boardwalk, and the Northwest NJ Regional Scholastic Championship, the largest outdoor chess event in New Jersey.
The Sparta Chess Club is a 501 (c) (3) non profit, and receives no funding from the Board of Education. Donations are tax deductible, and always appreciated.
