— Sparta High School is excited to announce that the spring musical is Mary Poppins. The student and faculty teams started working on the production earlier than normal this year to ensure that they are capturing the magic of the story of the Banks children and their nanny.
Returning to the show is Angela DeLuccia as the producer. This is her 17th year in this role at Sparta High School. According to DeLuccia, she has been really fortunate that Sparta has some very talented students which makes her job producing the musical every year that much easier and more interesting. “I have the ability to be able to produce musicals that showcase the diverse talents of our student body and the talent keeps growing each year. Sparta High School fosters a love of the arts. This is a community collaboration and our program continues to thrive with the help of the music, art, and design departments coupled with strong support from the administration and the parents.”
The students will perform a portion of the play for all of Sparta’s third graders on February 27. These students will be bussed in from the Mohawk Avenue school for an in-district field trip. DeLuccia not only hopes to get kids excited about coming to see the production in full but she also hopes that some of those students will be inspired to follow their artistic dreams.
It is also the tradition that the students perform a dress rehearsal on the evening of February 27. Our senior citizens are bussed to the high school from Knoll Heights for a complimentary dinner and are the audience members for the dress rehearsal. This is coordinated with our Key Club. Student members of the club act as hosts for the evening, serving the seniors their dinner and then escorting them to the auditorium for the performance. We also coordinate through our Pass It Along program for young students from Tilly’s Kids to come from Newark to see one of the performances.
Returning this year are Paige Lucas as Assistant Director of Choreography, Dr. Deb Gianuzzi as the Pit Conductor, Laura Lopes as the Choral Conductor, Nate Bowley as Lighting Director and Matt Marakovits as Sound Director. Joining the team this year is Lisa Tafuri as the Set Designer and Bob O’Grady and Dennis Romano as Set Construction crew.
The students are slated to perform Mary Poppins on March 1, 2, and 3, 2018 at 7 PM on the stage in the auditorium at Sparta High School. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $15 for adults and $10 for senior citizens and students or they can be purchased online at this website: www.eventbrite.com/o/sparta-high-school-musical-theater-program-angela-deluccia-12929617173
