‑ A 23-year-old Sparta man escaped serious injury Feb. 1 after he was entrapped in his vehicle after crashing it while under the influence of alcohol, according to the Sparta Police Department.

At 2:33 am, officers were dispatched to Sparta Avenue near the intersection of Fox Run Road to investigate the incident.

The investigation conducted by Officer Adam Carbery revealed that Remington C. Vokoun was driving his 1992 Toyota Camry south on Sparta Avenue at a high rate of speed, when he lost control. The vehicle swerved to the right, left the roadway striking several trees and then a large boulder where it came to a final rest.

Vokoun was bleeding from lacerations to his face and head and suffered a broken ankle, according to police.

At the scene Vokoun could not explain how he lost control of his vehicle but did admit to the officer that he had consumed at least ten beers, according to Sgt. John Paul Beebe, public affairs officer of the Sparta Police Department.

Vokoun was transported by the Sparta First Aid Squad to the Morristown Medical Center where he was treated for injuries and later released. A blood sample was obtained at the hospital, according to police.

Vokoun is charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, failure to maintain a single lane of travel and failure to have liability insurance.

His first court appearance in Sparta Municipal Court is scheduled at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 13.

Sgt. Jeffrey Mase assisted with the investigation.
