Sparta teen places third in musical competition
SPARTA — Kathryn Chamberlain, 16, of Sparta, a violinist, has placed third in a music competition for young instrumentalists, sponsored by The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey. She competed in the final round of the Pearl and Julius Young Music Competition, held Saturday, March 19, at Dolan Hall, College of Saint Elizabeth, Morristown, along with ten other talented performers. She received a $250 award for her performance of Violin Concerto, Movement #1, by PetrIlych Tchaikovsky.
Kathryn began her musical studies at the age of five. She has won numerous awards in New Jersey, including those at the Bravura Philharmonic Concerto Competition, ASA Solo Auditions, Handler MasterClass Auditions in the Thurnauer School and the Don Bosco Young Artists series.
She has appeared as a soloist in the Andrew DeGrado Music Festival at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and has toured Europe twice with the Sussex County Youth Orchestra.
She was first violinist with the New Jersey Regional 1 Orchestra for two years and Concertmaster of Sussex County Youth Orchestra for one.
She attended the inaugural season at Manhattan in the Mountains, an exclusive camp for solo and chamber music students.
She is currently a student at the Manhattan School of music, Pre-College Division, where she is studying violin with GrigoryKalinovsky.
Musicians, both classical and popular, abound in Kathryn’s family.
She has always been surrounded by musicians, including an uncle who was involved at one time with the Mostly Mozart Festival at Lincoln Center.
Kathryn says she loves city life and welcomes doing gigs there.
