Storm wallops Sparta, county and region

— A wicked afternoon storm on Tuesday that pummeled northern New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and southern New York state busted utility poles on Route 517 in Sparta, causing power outages and re-routing traffic, and brought trees down upon houses in the Lake Mohawk area and elsewhere. Downed trees, power lines in the street, road closures and large power outages were reported throughout the county. According to Jersey Central Power & Light, as of 10 am Wednesday, over 17,000 Sussex County customers were still without power.
