Weight loss program at New Perspectives

SPARTA — Everywhere you turn, there's a different diet book or plan promising you'll lose weight fast. As a nutritionist, I find that people often focus on the wrong target – like “how many pounds can I lose quickly” rather than working on the issues that prevent weight loss or thinking about the long term benefits of maintaining a healthy weight. When I — Regina Rider, DTR — was asked to manage the Ideal Protein Weight Loss Program at New Perspectives Health Care, I was satisfied with the sound protocol. I was especially pleased that it would allow me to use my skills as a nutritional counselor and allow for a personalized experience. No one is exactly alike, either in metabolic make-up or life-style, so it is important to treat each client as an individual if you want a successful outcome. My primary goal is better health and vitality for my clients and the weight loss is an added benefit.
The idea of offering a weight loss program at New Perspectives initially arose from our concerns related to community health. We have an increasing population of pre-diabetics and we also see significant issues with other weight related health problems like hypertension and heart disease. Even just a 10% reduction in weight has a significant impact on overall health. The program we use promotes protein intake and controls the consumption of carbohydrates, which promotes the use of stored fat as an energy source. However, this is not a high protein diet. A high protein diet that promotes only the consumption of meat results in people also ingesting large amounts of saturated fat, which is not healthy.
It is important that people who need to lose weight view a weigh loss program as an investment in their own health. There is an old Chinese proverb that says, “A person who has health has a thousand wishes; the person without health has just one”. What could be truer than this?
