SPARTA — The Spanish Cultural Club at Sussex County Technical School in Sparta and the Sussex Women’s Club have a long and fruitful relationship. Over the last several years the Women’s Club has generously donated to the Spanish Cultural Club’s humanitarian and cultural trips to the Dominican Republic. This year they had a successful fundraiser at Lorenzo’s Pizzeria and Restaurant in Sussex to raise money for construction of a one-of-a-kind high school outside of Puerto Plata. In the past they have donated wheelchairs, clothing, medical supplies, and plenty of school supplies. One of their members Debbie Puskas, was even able to join us one year.
On Nov. 4, the Spanish Cultural Club traveled for the 14th time to Puerto Plata on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. While there the 19 travelers continued this wonderful mission, distributing medical and school supplies, and clothing to schools and communities in need. Light construction was carried out for the community of Nuevo Renacer. In addition, we visited the Mustard Seed Home for handicapped children. The travelers included students from Sussex County Technical School, Sparta High School, and Newton High School as well as teachers, and several members of our community.
