Workshops offered for families with special needs children

    — Family Partners of Morris and Sussex Counties, a private, family-led organization that provides support for families with children who have special mental health, emotional or behavioral challenges, is hosting several workshops in the month of April:

    Mindfulness
    Presented by Suruchi Saini, MA, LPC, NCC, CCTP
    This free workshop will provide an excellent starting point to learn tips and skills to effectively manage the daily stressors we face at home, work and in all other facets of our lives with ease and improved self-control. It will include a 20-minute meditation and muscle relaxation session which will be beneficial to parents, caretakers or anyone who experiences difficulty focusing, managing time, or just staying calm. The techniques introduced in this workshop can also help address issues with mood swings, anxiety, depression, and related symptoms. A question and answer session will follow, so feel free to bring your specific concerns! This workshp is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.     The Nurtured Heart Approach to Parenting

    Whether you are a parent/caregiver, educator, or other professional, this free workshop will show you how you can take steps toward shifting negative behaviors and inspiring thriving relationships not just with the children you care for, but with all the people in your life. Please join us in learning about the Nurtured Heart Approach® to Parenting. This methodology consists of a set of strategies which assists children in further developing their self-regulation and has been found to be effective with children of all ages. It focuses on transforming the way children perceive themselves, their caregivers and the world around them. They learn to understand that their positive behavior will help them receive endless amounts of praise, energy, recognition and rewards and will support them in building a positive portfolio of themselves known as “Inner Wealth.” This workshop is free and open to the public.     Special Plans for a Special Life

    Marc Youngelson, Esq., Partner, Cosner Youngelson Counsellors at Law
    Join us for an educational workshop that will address many questions and concerns surrounding life planning and legal options for a loved one with special needs. Benjamin Stark of TJP will guide you through the overwhelming financial planning process. Marc Youngelson, Esq., an attorney with extensive experience representing children with special needs and their families, will discuss special education law and other legal issues faced by special needs families. Topics to be discussed: estate planning techniques when planning for a child with special needs; setting up and funding a special needs trust; Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid; legal issues for special needs families; overview of IDEA and eligibility for special education and related services; conflict resolution, mediation and due process; legal guidance related to transition services and beyond.
