Newton — McGuire Chevrolet Cadillac is supporting the Driven To Read campaign, by serving as a collection spot for new and gently used children’s books, now through the end of the year. The Driven to Read campaign promotes literacy within the state. Mike McGuire, president of the downtown Newton dealership, encourages residents to support the campaign by dropping off children’s books (pre-school through high school) at the showroom during normal business hours. Books donated to the Driven To Read campaign will be distributed to organizations that benefit underprivileged children and promote reading. “Illiteracy is a greater problem than most people realize,” notes McGuire. “Four out of ten adults in New Jersey are functionally illiterate,” according to Penni Wild, executive director of New Jersey Reads: The Foundation for Literacy. Wild continues, “Many cannot read, write, speak or understand English well enough to get or keep a job. Many cannot read to their children, follow basic written instructions or take action on important information. We appreciate the activism of all participating dealerships on behalf of families throughout the state — many of whom don’t have books in their home to nurture a love for reading.” The Driven To Read campaign has been spearheaded by a network of New Jersey automotive retailers around the state, in conjunction with the New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers (NJ CAR). “McGuire Chevrolet Cadillac is proud to support this initial Driven To Read campaign and joins with our colleagues in the New Jersey retail automotive industry to raise awareness of this issue that impacts many residents,” said McGuire. McGuire Chevrolet Cadillac is located adjacent to the square in downtown Newton.#
