New woodworking class popular at Hilltop
Sparta - Woodworking was added to the curriculum this year as an elective class for students in the sixth and seventh grades at Hilltop Country Day School in Sparta. Woodworking was the passion of former art teacher Marty Thomason, whose tragic passing from an automobile accident deeply affected the community. The course was added to the curriculum to honor her memory. Funding was made possible through memorial donations. A ceremony was held at the school to dedicate the woodworking area of the art studio and a memorial plaque was hung in honor of Thomason. Students in the woodworking classes get first-hand experience with small power and hand tools. This has proven to be a rewarding experience for them to discover and increase their knowledge of three-dimensional art. Beginning in September, the woodworking course will be introduced to other grades as part of the regular art curriculum offered at Hilltop.
