SPARTA - The skies around Horseshoe Lake in Succasunna were aglow with hundreds of illuminated balloons Oct 1. The annual Light the Night Walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society was taking place, and among the participants was the team of “Nisha’s Knights,” who raised a total of $12,350 for the organization. The five-member team was made up of the Drummond family, Rick, Rashmi, Maya, Rohan, and Nisha. Nisha was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) last spring at the age of 11 and is approaching her final year of chemotherapy treatment. Although their fight against cancer is still a part of their everyday lives, the Drummonds wanted to do something for the organization, which did so much for them. “We were amazed by all the support we received,” noted Rashmi Drummond, Nisha’s mom. “Our family, friends, coworkers, and schools came forward with such an outpouring of generosity. We had to keep changing our goal, because we kept exceeding it!” Light the Night is an evening walk to celebrate and commemorate the lives of people touched by cancer. Walkers hold illuminated balloons - white for survivors, red for supporters - and light the night with hope. The walk culminates in a community celebration, with music, refreshments, and entertainment. The proceeds from the event support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest voluntary organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services.
