Newton - The String Trio of New York will perform the world premiere of a new work by guitarist/composer James Emery at 7:30 p.m. om Friday, May 5, at the Sussex Bank Theater on the campus of Sussex County Community College. The work, The River of Orion, will explore connections between composition and improvisation, from traditional approaches to present-day multi-dimensional aspects. Admission is $5. Since its formation in 1977 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the String Trio of New York has played for audiences around the world with their unique acoustic jazz improvisations and compositions for violin, guitar and bass. The trio has been one of the most active touring ensembles of its kind and has performed hundreds of concerts throughout North America, Europe, East Asia, India, the Middle East and North Africa. The group has released 16 recordings. Emery, hailed as “one of the world’s greatest guitarists” (allaboutjazz.com) and chosen as one of “66 great six-stringers” (Down Beat magazine), has received international recognition for his distinctive approach to both improvisation and composition.
