Julia Piemonte (left) and Mitchell Fliss, fifth graders at Mohawk Avenue School in Sparta, participated in the Pennies for Patients fundraiser at the school. The student council-sponsored coin drive raised over $450 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Peer Assistance and Leadership group at Helen Morgan School also participated and raised more than $1,183 at their school. Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in spare change by more than 10 million students throughout the country. The funds, collected during a three-week period, go towards finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
