Crimestoppers, Sparta police seek information on bias crime

Sparta. Police say two “young adult males” broke into the Sparta United Methodist Church and set the LBGTQ+ flag on fire. Sparta police and Sussex County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information.

Sussex County Sheriff Michael F. Strada announces that Crimestoppers and the Sparta Township Police Department are seeking information pertaining to multiple biased criminal mischief complaints in Sparta Township.

The Sparta Township Police Department is investigating multiple biased criminal mischief complaints that occurred at the Sparta United Methodist Church located at 71 Sparta Avenue.

Most recently, on April 20, at approximately 12:30 a.m., two young adult males are observed entering the church property from the rear wooded area. The suspects then set the LBGTQ+ flag on fire using an accelerant.

The Sussex County Sheriff’s Crimestoppers organization will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of criminals. At no time will anyone ask the tipsters name.
