SPARTA - Sparta police are investigating the alleged assault of a Rev. Brown student Friday night during a Little League Football Association game at Ungerman Field. At least three Sparta students reportedly assaulted the girl, police said. The victim was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where she was released with facial injuries. The juveniles were detained briefly. Witnesses at the scene said the fight ensued over some "name-calling." The mother of the victim said Tuesday she is upset with the way the matter has been handled by local officials and will soon release information to the public. Sgt. Russell Smith, of the Sparta Police Department, said charges were expected to be filed Wednesday. Charges could vary from simple assault to attempted murder. The severity of those charges will depend upon the severity of the victim's injuries.
