Quilt shop joins pillowcase challenge
Local sewers and quilters can take on this simple project to help area charities Vernon - Maureen Lasslett, owner of Pieceful Choices quilt shop, is encouraging local sewers to participate in the American Patchwork & Quilting magazine’s challenge to “Make a Pillowcase, Make a Difference” during this year’s “One Million Pillowcase Challenge.” Their work will be donated to local charities. Anyone who’s got something to contribute can drop off their pillowcase at Lasslett’s shop or another local quilt shop, which will donate them to a local charity of their choice, and update the pillowcase counter at allpeoplequilt.com/millionpillowcases. The counter tracks nationwide progress toward the goal of one million pillowcases. Why pillowcases? According to Lasslett, a pillowcase can make a difference in the community it can provide comfort for a cancer patient, hope for a foster child, encouragement for a battered woman or beauty for a nursing home resident. For those who want to participate, but aren’t sure how to make a pillowcase, Pieceful Choices offers colorful pillowcase kits for sale, complete with fabric and instructions. Participants who return the completed case in its original bag, get a $5 coupon toward shop goods. “There’s a kind of race gong on”, she said. “We have a chart as soon as you enter the store showing who made how many so far. For each one brought in, you get a little pillowcase sticker next to your name. It’s a lot of fun to see the friendly competition going on!” The shop will donate to local charities such as Samaritan Inn and Sunrise House, as well as the Joseph M. Sansari Children’s Hospital within the Hackensack University Medical Center in cooperation with ConKerr Cancer. Area nursing homes will also receive pillowcases suitable for their residents.
