Retired educators honor author Catherine Guirreri, 95

Lafayette - The Sussex County chapter of the N.J. Retirees’ Education Assn. honored member Catherine Guirreri at their last luncheon meeting. Guirreri recently had her third book published. Fred Aug, president of the statewide organization of retired teachers, presented Guirreri with a pin from the organization. Marie Kovacs, president of the Sussex County Education Association, also congratulated Guirreri. Guirreri’s third book Caty, Jill of All Trades was recently published by the Epsilon chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary international women’s sorority, of which she is a charter member. She has also written, The One-Room School, published by the Lafayette Preservation Society, and My Life on the Farm, published by the Sussex County Agricultural Society. These are part of a collection of books written with Connie Mclntyre for her family. Guirreri moved to a farm in Lafayette at age 12 from Brooklyn with her Italian immigrant parents. She has resided there ever since. She taught in the Statesville one room school in Lafayette, the Lafayette Consolidated School and in the Newton public schools. After her retirement she gave many talks to students about her experiences in the one-room school. She spoke to the local retired educators group about writing and publishing a book at the group’s December luncheon meeting. The group is selling copies of her latest book for $5 plus postage. The organization holds four luncheon/ meetings a year, usually at the Lafayette House, on the first Monday of April, June and December, and third Monday of September. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 3, at the Lafayette House. The June 5 meeting will be held at the Farmstead Country Club in Andover. Annual dues are $6, with life membership at $80.
