Augusta — The SCARC Foundation, Inc. Board of Trustees will hold the Gordon Shelton Memorial Walk-a-thon on Sunday, May 22 at the Sussex County Fair Grounds in Augusta. Registration for the event begins at 11:30 a.m. and the two-mile walk begins at 12:30 p.m. All proceeds raised by the walk-a-thon will support SCARC and SCARC Guardianship Services. To register to participate, visit scarcwalk2011.kintera.org. For almost three decades, Sheldon was a leader in supporting SCARC and all of its functions. The organization held a special place in his heart, as his daughter Bonnie is disabled and participates in SCARC’s Sparta Center Program. Over the years, he was an avid volunteer, a SCARC board member since 1980, and a member of the Board of Trustees of ARC of New Jersey, serving as president from 1994 to 1995. “Gordon had such a heart for individuals with developmental disabilities,” said Ginny. “He looked for a better life for them and was always an advocate.” Ginny Gordon traditionally walks with her daughter and family in the walk-a-thon and this year she will also be walking with the two 4-H Clubs that Gordon was active with. She hopes to have enough people to create her own team. After the walk, there will be food and entertainment suitable for the entire family including hayrides, a bouncy house and various carnival games. The SCARC Choir, comprised of individuals served by SCARC, will serenade participants with the national anthem. The afternoon will also feature DJ Ray and a live band.
