Newton - The Foundation at Sussex County Community College will award 60 scholarships at their May ceremony. Current students at the college are encouraged to apply for any of the available scholarships, ranging in dollar amount from $250 to $1250, which are to be used for the fall semester. At the most recent scholarship ceremony in December, more than 50 scholarships, amounting to over $39,000 ,were awarded to 81 students for the 2006 spring semester. To apply for a scholarship, students must complete a scholarship application in addition to submitting a personal essay. Students are also required to provide a letter of recommendation in support of their candidacy. Students may visit the Sussex County Community College web site at sussex.edu/ for further directions on applying for available scholarships. Completed scholarship applications should be returned to the counseling center by the March 22 deadline. If students have any questions or need assistance, they are invited to stop by the counseling center or call 973-300-2207 any Tuesday or Wednesday. “Scholarships are an important component for many of our students,” said Linda Nieman, executive director of advancement and planning at the college. “More than 50 percent of our students receive some form of financial aid, so the need is growing as our enrollment grows. We are very fortunate that so many area businesses and individuals understand the need and support our students with much-needed dollars.” For information on how to start a scholarship or endowment fund at Sussex Community, call 973-300-2124.
