Sparta Girl Scouts visit Philadelphia
Sparta Girl Scout Troop 848 is a group of 6th grade Reverend Brown students from Sparta, with the Sterling-Mohawk Council. This year, my troop of 11 Girl Scouts went on our first big trip. From Nov. 9 to 11, Troop 848 went to Philadelphia. The trip started with the drive down: We listened to a tape about Edgar Allen Poe’s life, heard one of his stories, and discussed questions. So, our first museum on the visit to Philadelphia was the house of Poe, which was one of our troop’s favorites. For two and a half days, we walked around from museum to museum learning so much new information. Some museums that we visited were the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, U.S. Mint, Christ Church and Burial Ground. We met a re-enactor from the American Revolutionary War, who discussed life as a soldier, taught us how to set up a tent, and showed us how to make candles. On Saturday, we even met “Ben Franklin.” Each night at the hotel, individuals were rewarded with Hershey kisses for any correct answers to questions during the tours. More kisses were won for answering other questions about things discussed during the day. We also played games, made a craft, and learned how to hang and fold a flag. Our favorite things that we did and saw were the Duck Tour, the National Liberty Museum, and the Franklin Institute. We all had a great time, thanks to our leaders Lori Healy, my mom, and Sheridan Culbertson. I would recommend all troops visiting Philly some day. (Tabitha is a member of Girl Scout Troop 848.)
