Sparta high school grad to do relief work in Nepal and Africa
Trever Morrow delays college to help teach English, health and academics to third world countries’ citizens through Global Volunteer SPARTA - Trevor Morrow, an 18 year old graduate of the Sparta High School Class of 2006, has elected to postpone entering college this fall to do volunteer work in Nepal and Eastern Africa. He is seeking aid and assistance by reaching out to people in Sussex County. Trevor will be working with the Global Volunteer Network, a nonprofit organization based in New Zealand, that offers extensive programs all over the world. The volunteers work in areas such as: teaching English, working with orphans, health education, academics and building projects, as well as helping local people start and maintain their own business to become self-sufficient. In Africa, he will work with orphans affected by the growing AIDS epidemic. Trevor will be leaving for Nepal in late August, where he will spend four weeks. After a brief return to New Jersey, he will then depart for Kenya and Tanzania until the second week of December. Trevor, a lifelong resident of Sparta, has been an active member of the Sparta student body throughout his entire academic career. He was elected to various Student Council positions, including vice president, as well as being a Peer Development Program leader and holding officer positions in both Future Business Leaders of America and DECA. When a devastating Tsunami struck South East Asia, he organized a benefit dinner at Sparta High School that raised $2,500. The money was donated to relief agencies to help children in that region. Trevor has also been recognized by Congressman Frelinghuysen as an outstanding student leader and volunteer. In addition, Trevor has been an active member of Pass it Along, a nonprofit organization founded by Diane Taylor, that works to better Sussex, Warren and Morris counties through volunteerism. Here, Trevor served as the President of the Youth Council. He is also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sparta. As volunteering for this program is self-funded, Trevor is seeking the support of people in the community. The Global Volunteer Network, like many other private, non-government-funded organizations, cannot afford to pay for their volunteers’ trips. Funds go towards the cost of transportation, lodging, meals, teaching supplies and miscellaneous expenses. If you would like to make a donation, checks can been made payable to “Trevor Morrow” and sent to his attention at P.O. Box 308 Sparta, NJ 07871. Please write “Volunteer Program” under memo. Any amount donated is greatly appreciated. Another consideration would be a donation of miles from a frequent traveler’s airline program. If by chance he finds himself “over-funded,” Trevor will use the remaining funds to buy supplies for the orphanages. Between now and his departure, Trevor can be found working at the Lake Mohawk Country Club restaurant and Restaurant II Porto on the Lake Mohawk Boardwalk.
