SPARTA — Tom Skevin of Sparta has been named treasurer of the New Jersey Sports Writers Association. He succeeds John Bruns of Phillipsburg, who held the post for many years and remains on the NJSWA Board of Governors. In addition to keeping track of the organization’s financial matters, Skevin is overseeing ticket sales for the group’s yearly awards banquet. “It’s a big pair of shoes to fill, but John has left things in good stead and is helping with the transition,” said Skevin, a former New Jersey Herald sports writer who now works for The Record of Bergen County. “We have our 71st annual banquet coming up Jan. 28, and that’s a big part of what I’ll be doing in the near future.” The NJSWA is a non-profit, statewide organization dedicated to maintaining and improving sports coverage at all levels in the Garden State. The sports writers also award a $1,000 scholarship each year to a college student who is interested in pursuing a career in the field. An award-winning journalist for over 20 years whose work has been published nationwide, Skevin lives in the township with his daughter, Michelle.
