Sparta resident graduates from University of Richmond

Sparta - Phillip A. Durkin, son of Pat and Kathy Durkin of Sparta, received a Bachelor of Arts degree May 14 from the University of Richmond in Richmond, Va.. He majored in history. Durkin attended the university on a four-year ROTC scholarship. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army on May 13. He is assigned to the field artillery branch and will be stationed at Ft. Sill, Okla. Durkin studied abroad at the Umbra Institute in Perugia, Italy, during the fall semester of his senior year. He is a 2002 graduate of Pope John XXIII Regional High School in Sparta. The University of Richmond is a private liberal arts university consisting of schools of arts and sciences, business, leadership studies, law and continuing studies.
